The Sustainable Organization Library contains more than 8000 individually searchable chapters, case studies and journal papers drawn from more than 600 book and journal volumes, published by the leading independent sustainability publisher, Greenleaf Publishing, and a number of partner organizations. Each item carries its own metadata, which means that the collection is fully searchable at the chapter/article level.

The Sustainable Organization Library 2014 gives instant access to:

• Leading international authors, commentators and researchers on sustainability
• Case studies on best practice from international organizations
• Evidence-based research to inspire the next generation of leaders and environmental researchers.

SOL is a unique, focused library of key texts in sustainability. 

How to access the Sustainable Organization Library
Unfortunately, it is not accessible via the Library SmartSearch search engine so you will need to choose to:

• Access the Sustainable Organization Library from the Business & Management LibGuide and then choose the Journals tab.  
• Access the Sustainable Organization Library directly from Library SmartSearch and then click on the Databases tab in the grey toolbar at the top of the screen.

Changes to the Web of Knowledge

Over this weekend (Sunday 12 Jan 1400 GMT until Monday 13 Jan 0200 GMT), the Web of Knowledge will be changing its look and feel.

• The Web of Knowledge will, in future, be known as the Web of Science
• The group of databases that used to form the Web of Science will now be known as "Web of Science Core Collection"
• Access to databases via the new Web of Science will remain unchanged to our subscriptions in the Web of Knowledge (i.e. Web of Science Core Collection, BIOSYS Citation Index up to 2008, MEDLINE)
• All search functionality will remain the same, so you can continue to search the new Web of Science in the same way you previously searched the Web of Knowledge

FAME - company database has a new feature

Enhancements to Fame – November 2013 The latest version of Fame includes a few fixes and performance improvements. The new version has gone live this morning. I'd like to draw your attention to one new feature in particular. You can now identify directors or managers who we have also identified as shareholders in the same company. Searching

In the reports an icon indicates the shareholder is also a manager. In Lists ‘Yes/No’ indicators are used.

Education resource database - ERIC

Since the Obama administration has requested the shutdown of government services http://www.theguardian.com/world/obama-administration you will find that the database called ERIC is not available at the moment from this web address http://eric.ed.gov/ .  

However, EBSCO have provided the database via their platform so you can now access the database through EBSCOhost.  Please use the Library SmartSearch A-Z link and choose the letter E.  Look for ERIC in the list and choose the name.

This is a database that provides articles and reports on teaching and learning and is hosted by The Institute of Education Sciences in America.  It is used by staff and students who are interested in any aspect of teaching and learning research.

A win for the Information Services Team

Congratulations to Clare Langman, one of our Information Specialists in the Information Services Team, who has won access to Industrial Analysis data worth £5,000 until 31st March 2014 for Aston University staff and students.

The Library subscribes to a market analysis database called Passport which is supplied by Euromonitor.  Clare attended a webinar on new developments within this market analysis database.  At the end of the webinar, Clare answered all the quiz questions correctly and was offered the prize to the additional Industrial Analysis data by our academic account manager Ruth Bysshe.

Westlaw - search enhancements

Throughout 2013 Westlaw UK has made a number of enhancements to the database  search functionality including suggested terms and relevancy ranking. The latest enhancement to Westlaw UK search is the introduction of filtering to search results.

The new search filtering enhancement will let you refine results, saving time and effort. Filtering is applied across all of Westlaw UK (excluding books and EU),

• Filtering over whole results set (not limited to 4,000)
• Further enhances ease of searching Westlaw UK
• Detailed indexing allows filtering by topic, date, jurisdiction, content type, court and status
• Ability to filter across all possible results and not just the capped list for display
• Ability to Print, Download, E-mail and Folder from filtered results
• Ability to save the filtered results for alerting
• Ability to save the filtered results for RSS
• Ability to build links to the filtered results

Passport market research databases - access problems

Due to infrastructure maintenance, you may experience disruption to the Euromonitor's Passport Global Market Information Database from Friday 9 August till Sunday 11 August.  Euromonitor apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and hope to have all Passport features operating back to normal as soon as possible.




 



Web of Knowledge - enhancements

Thomson Reuters has released the latest version of Web of Knowledge which focuses on improved
ease of use with new local language interfaces, search forgiveness and improved user interface for registration and output.

Check out their recorded tutorial for full information but you will now be able to see

• alternative suggestions for misspelt search terms
• auto-suggestions for publication titles
• streamlined personalisation features
• quicker export options for example in to EndNote
• new local language interfaces in Portuguese and Spanish

Keynote - UK Industry market reports

Are you looking for UK data on industry sectors?  Have you tried accessing Keynote?

Keynote will provide you with cutting edge consumer research, company information and market insight in to over 2000 industry sectors.  Aston University Library has subscribed to small section of Keynote reports for a long time but recently we have accepted trial access to the entire range of market reports.  

To access : -

• Please log in to the Aston e-Library
• Choose Find Resource from the right hand side of the screen
• In the NAME field type Keynote
• Click the orange FIND RESOURCE button
• Click the name Keynote in the results list at the bottom of the screen
• You will need to login with your University username and password if you are accessing off-campus

Once you have access to the front screen, please choose the Market Research Report pod at the top of the screen and then you can browse alphabetically or search for an industry.

Please note: As we are running Keynote as a trial, there are prices showing next to the title of each report.  You will not be asked to pay for the report.  Just click on the title and you should see an Executive Summary.  On the left hand side you should also see a list of chapter headings for the report and a series of green ticks.  If the green ticks are showing then you have full text access.

You do not have access to the data sitting within the Company Information pod as this is not part of our trial access.

Are you interested in any topics related to "Social Responsibility"?

Dear Students,

The Library is pleased to announce a new subscription is now available to a web-based magazine called Ethical Corporation. 
 

The e-version of the Ethical Corporation magazine contains the world’s largest archive of business sustainability articles.  There are currently over 7,000 available to search and browse.  There is also access to weekly web-only opinion to the monthly magazine and database – 7,300 searchable CR related articles.  Finally, there is access to podcasts from key personnel within the Corporate Responsibility industry.

Access is available through the Aston e-Library and then choose Find Resource. You can either search for the resource in the Name search box OR choose the Business category and the Full Text Journals sub-category.

Please note:  If you are trying to access this resource from a computer based off the University campus you will need to choose Login on the top of the screen and type in the required email and password.  You can find these details via our Library Matters module on Blackboard and the menu item Passwords and Logging on.  Alternatively, please ask at the Library Help Desk.

Making library resources mobile!

Did you know that many of the resources available to you via Aston University Library & Information Services are available from your mobile device as well?

This summer, we launched a mobile version of the Library Catalogue, making it easier than ever to find books as you navigate the Library shelves. This is accessible through the usual web browser on your mobile device.

Many of our resource providers have developed mobile versions of their interfaces as well.  For example, you can access the Web of Knowledge, EBSCOhost, IEEE Xplore and JSTOR when you're out and about using the mobile interfaces provided.  Sometimes, free registration is required for access to the mobile version.  Comment on this post or ask at the Help Desk if you have any questions about this.

Some of our providers have created apps for you to download.  Elsevier provide apps for ScienceDirect and Scopus Alerts.  To download an EBSCOhost app for iPhone or Android, access EBSCOhost as normal and click the link at the bottom of any EBSCOhost page to email yourself the download instructions, access key and a link to the app store.  The RSC (Royal Society of Chemistry) have an iOS app for their journals and for ChemSpider.

Aston e-Library: Problems accessing individual resources

We are currently experiencing some problems with the Aston e-Library which is affecting access to the Find Resources part of the service. Staff are working to resolve the problem and LIS will let you know via the Blogworm when the service is fully available again.
