JoVE Biology goes mobile

The Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE) is a peer reviewed scientific video journal, and at Aston you have full access to JoVE Biology. JoVE has just released two brand new mobile apps (via the Apple App Store and Google Play) and an optimized version of the JoVE website that delivers seamless access to content from any mobile device.

In each case, you will need to register for an account with JoVE to access the content - just use your institutional e-mail address to get access to subscribed content.

Accessing Library SmartSearch mobile site?

If you regularly use Library SmartSearch on a small tablet or phone, you will be automatically directed to the the mobile site. You might find it easier to navigate your results if you switch to the Standard view rather than the default Brief view:

• Select the settings icon at the top of the screen

• Select the Standard format and click on Update

You should now see useful links to full-text articles and e-books underneath each record in your results list.

Mobile device enhancements on Cambridge journals platform

The latest release of Cambridge Journals Online functionality includes new developments for mobile devices.


Mobile Device Twinning
Using your Aston University instiutional access, you can now twin your mobile devices with the Cambridge Journals platform, so that you can access subscriptions when off campus. Devices can be twinned via the Cambridge platform while on Aston's WiFi network, or remotely by using the ‘Mobile Device Twinning’ option on the Cambridge platform, which provides a twinning code that can be entered into the device. Kindle Button
A ‘Send to Kindle’ button is now displayed at article level. When clicked, a box is displayed into which the reader can enter their Kindle email address. CJO will then send the article to the reader’s Kindle, where it will appear in the home screen when the device is synced. Further information is available on Cambridge's blog.

Making library resources mobile!

Did you know that many of the resources available to you via Aston University Library & Information Services are available from your mobile device as well?

This summer, we launched a mobile version of the Library Catalogue, making it easier than ever to find books as you navigate the Library shelves. This is accessible through the usual web browser on your mobile device.

Many of our resource providers have developed mobile versions of their interfaces as well.  For example, you can access the Web of Knowledge, EBSCOhost, IEEE Xplore and JSTOR when you're out and about using the mobile interfaces provided.  Sometimes, free registration is required for access to the mobile version.  Comment on this post or ask at the Help Desk if you have any questions about this.

Some of our providers have created apps for you to download.  Elsevier provide apps for ScienceDirect and Scopus Alerts.  To download an EBSCOhost app for iPhone or Android, access EBSCOhost as normal and click the link at the bottom of any EBSCOhost page to email yourself the download instructions, access key and a link to the app store.  The RSC (Royal Society of Chemistry) have an iOS app for their journals and for ChemSpider.

Introducing the Library Catalogue direct to your mobile device

LIS is pleased to announce that from the beginning of this academic year the Library Catalogue will be available in mobile format.

You will be able to access your library record, search for and reserve items in the same way as the standard Catalogue but the format will make it easier to use on your mobile device.
